The Nokia Corporation, based in Finland, are currently the biggest cell phone manufacturer in the world, but like so many other major companies, they started out doing something very different indeed.

The Nokia Corporation, based in Finland, are currently the biggest cell phone manufacturer in the world, but like so many other major companies, they started out doing something very different indeed.
The company was formed in Finland in 1871 when paper mill owner and engineer Fredrik Idestam went into partnership with his friend Leo Mechelin and called the new enterprise the Nokia Company, after the town of Nokia, where one of their paper mills was situated. In 1902, they added electricity generation to their list of business activities, which was soon to overtake paper production as the most profitable part of the business.
But by the end of World War I, the Nokia company was on its knees, and was bought out by galoshes manufacturer Finnish Rubber Works. A few years later, the company also bought Finnish Cable Works, who made cables for the telecommunications and electricity supply industry. The three firms merged in 1967 to form the Nokia Corporation. Over the years, Nokia were concerned with making a large variety of products including rubber and paper products, aluminium, electricity generators, electronic components, cables, and consumer electronics amongst other things.
However, they abandoned all their other interests in the 1990s to concentrate solely on mobile and land based telecommunications, a market that was on the cusp of explosive growth.
The first electronic device to be manufactured by Nokia was a pulse analyser for use in nuclear power plants. Alongside a firm called Salora Oy, they pioneered VHF radio in the mid 60s, and later introduced an in-car radio telephone network, called ARP, which used this technology. This network was the first of its kind in Finland and was certainly the most successful of its type in the world at that time.
Nokia made another telecommunications first in the late seventies, with the invention of the the first digital telephone switch, the Nokia DX200. They bought out Salora Oy in 1984 to form a new mobile telecoms division which was called Nokia-Mobira Oy, capitalising on their previous success with the ARP network. They released the first commercially available radio telephone that could be used outside of a car, the Mobira Talkman, that same year.
In 1987, they introduced the Mobira Cityman 900, one of the first hand held mobile phones, which was a huge success despite its ridiculous weight, bulky dimensions, and exorbitant price tag.
In 1989, Nokia-Mobira Oy changed their name to Nokia Mobile Phones, and soon became the most profitable arm of the whole corporation, which convinced them to ditch all their other interests in order to throw all their weight behind this lucrative new venture. It was a gamble that paid off, as they are now the biggest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world.
