If you’ve ever travelled internationally, you probably know that things can get a little confusing. Unlike taking a trip to somewhere domestically, a trip to Hong Kong can have different requirements depending on what you’re reasons for travelling are. So whether you’re travelling for business, vacation or a little bit of both, here are some things to consider for your Hong Kong vacation:
Business
If you’re taking a trip to Hong Kong for business, make sure to take several business cards with you. Hong Kong businessmen tend to hand out business cards quite frequently and expect one in return. In fact, not getting one back can almost be considered an insult. Make sure to hand over your business card immediately when meeting someone for the first time with both hand and accompany it with a slight bow from the waist.
Currency
Hong Kong money is similar to that of the United States. Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong Dollar (HK$), which consists of 100 cents to the dollar. The denominations are roughly the same as here in the US, too, with banks distributing the following – HK$10, HK$20, HK$50, HK$100, HK$500 and HK$1,000. Coins come in 10 cents, 20 cents and 50 cents, which are all bronze-colored, and silver-colored HK$1, HK$2 and HK$5.
Make sure to exchange your money either before you leave or when you get there and make note of the currency exchange rate. This rate has typically been HK$7.8 to each US dollar, however just like any other exchange rate, that can fluctuate from time-to-time.
When you’re paying for something on your trip to Hong Kong, take note of commissions, which are payable at hotels, major retail outlets and other places. In fact, commissions are often charged when exchanging money, so try to make your exchange before you head overseas for your Hong Kong vacation. And don’t be afraid to use the ATMs to avoid those exchange rates, as automated teller machines can be found pretty much throughout Hong Kong.
Customs
Anyone that’s travelled overseas has likely had to go through customs and knows that this can be a time-consuming, yet necessary fact of international travel. Make sure to leave extra time to get through customs so you don’t miss your flight. Also, take note of what you’ll have to declare when you enter and leave Hong Kong. Most dutiable items such as liquor and tobacco, that exceed the duty-free concessions, will have to be declared.
Health
Hong Kong is located fairly close to the equator, so make sure to hydrate frequently and bring suntan lotion. Tap water is safe in Hong Kong, though bottled water is usually provided for guests staying in Hong Kong hotels. Vaccinations are not required for those staying in Hong Kong.
Language
Hong Kong has two official languages – Chinese (Cantonese) and English. In fact, most people taking a vacation in Hong Kong from the United States note that they had no trouble with the language during their trip. Most signs are either completely in English or mostly in English, so luckily reading signs won’t be an issue.
Passport
This should go without saying, but make sure your passport is updated and always keep it handy for your Hong Kong tour. Passports must be valid for at least six months following your arrival to this glorious land.
Make sure to check with the Hong Kong Immigration Department if you have any questions on anything covered here or anything else and make sure to have the time of your life when you visit Hong Kong!
