No one wants to pay over the odds. Whether you have a high budget for your Prague Trip or a low one the following Top 10 Money Saving Tips for your Prague Trip should help you enjoy your time in Prague whilst knowing you are always getting the best value for money.
1. The Flight: Low cost airlines fly into Prague from all over Europe, BMI Baby, Easyjet, Ryanair, Wizzair and so on, no matter which country you are flying from it is likely there is a low cost option. Do not fall into the trap of believing that booking at the “last minute”, despite what a famous website tells you, leads to anything but savings. Booking in advance, for your hotel and your flight ensure the best deals for city breaks. Booking well, well in advance with the low cost carriers can see you paying only 1p (baring taxes) whereas leaving it to the last minute drives costs up over £100 a ticket.
2. The Hotel: Whether you want to book a 5 star hotel in Prague's most exclusive district or take a 2 star option in the outskirts, there can still be massive savings from shopping around. For example, booking your 5 star direct at the last minute can cost you £200+ per night, whereas booking in advance for the same hotel can cost as little as £70 per night. See a great guide to Luxury Prague Hotels here. At the other end of the spectrum you may wish to save on a 2 or 3 star hotel, in this case it's a good idea to use a hotel comparison website. Compare Hotels Prague.
3. The Restaurant: At the cheap end of the spectrum, eating in Prague can be very cost effective, eating out can even be cheaper than buying from stores and making your own meals. Prague has a great canteen culture where food is charged by weight. Stocking up on filling but light foods can allow you to eat out for as little as £3 per person. At the luxury end, you are spoilt for choice, being such a touristic city, there is a wealth of cuisine available. Czech food, traditional meats and cheeses are available in all areas of Prague and you can eat a fabulous goulash for £6 even in the best establishments. For a fabulous awe-inspiring view of Prague together with international cuisine visit the Nebozizek Restaurant atop of Petrin hill, still great value at around £30 per person.
4. The Opera: Again, you can book ahead online for performances at the Prague State Opera and for classical music performances at the Municipal House. Booking ahead can save up to 50% compared to turning up on the day. However, Prague is alive with classical music, with performances daily all over the city including the Stare Mesto and Mala Strana, tickets here are available throughout the day with significant discounts for students.
5. The Pub: An obvious tip: drink local. A glass of wine in Prague, if it's the local Bohemian/Moravian wine, is usually around 30 crowns (£1.20) and a glass of Staropramen or Pilsner beer is even less. There is no need to go to Prague and drink German beer and French wine, although it is perfectly possibly. For a huge range of Czech wines and cheeses visit the atmospheric Monarch Wine Bar on Na Perstyne, this is worth a visit on anyone's itinerary.
6. The Currency: Don't bother with the currency exchange stalls in the airport or the city centre, they're a rip off. Simply take your debit card and credit card with you. Use your debit card in the ATM machines to withdraw crowns and your credit card for purchases in the hotel, restaurant and entertainments. This can save £50 or more on your trip in wasted bank charges alone.
7. The Tours: There are booths on Narodni (a central street of Prague running along the northern side of Wenceslas Square) offering Segway, Jewish, City and Boat tours. However, once again, booking in advance via online merchants can save you money on these tours. Booking ahead of time also avoids the disappointment of a fully booked tour and allows your to choose the correct date and time of your tour for your preferred language. It is thought good manners to tip your tour guide.
8. The Taxi: Do not book taxis with your hotel, these are classed as transfers and are more expensive than hailing a cab on the street. Taxi services are reliable, cheap and direct. Always use an official taxi service. Taxi ranks are well spread throughout the city with main ranks opposite Starbucks on Wenceslas Square and on the corner of Na Perstyne and Narodni, in Mala Strana, next to St Nicholas Church.
9. The Phone Calls: Phone boxes are, like in cities throughout the world, becoming a thing on the past although there are still banks of them on the main central streets. Coins can be used here but these phone boxes are badly maintained and we have thrown money into 4 phone boxes before we were able to use one, so, phone cards are the answer and they are found in newsagents. Taking your mobile phone to Prague is fine, but remember to turn off your wifi as data streamed to your phone in a foreign country will cost a fortune. Don't watch Youtube, answer Facebook alerts or post on Twitter on holiday from your mobile. Remember to call your carrier before you go so they can offer you the best international package for the time you are abroad.
10. The Shopping: Whilst shops, services and merchants accept the Euro, they are rounding up their prices where possible, take Czech crowns with you. Do not use your debit cards in the shops, there is a bank charge here that doesn't exist for the consumer when using your credit card. Do not shop on Wenceslas Square, instead take the metro to Andel Metro Station where there is a fabulous mall with a Marks and Spencer, H&M and other international stores.
