A free-market democracy, the country continues to spring up in both production industries and service sectors. When probing the reasons behind this enormous growth, we find that it’s primarily due to the increasing size of middle class consumer, considerable foreign investments and of course, a satisfactory performance by our services sectors. Yes, it’s the fast growth rate in services sector that continues to lead the overall growth surge in India. If talking about services sectors in India, almost every segment has seen a massive growth over the time, but the performance of tourism is outstanding that’s recognized as the fastest growing segment and the largest service industry in the country.
Tourism in India – An Economic Growth Engine
Tourism is truly an engine for economic growth in India as it contributes more than 6% to the nation’s GDP and around 9% to the total employment. With the number of International tourists reaching a record 17.9 million, the tourism industry generates around130 billion US dollar annually, and it’s expected to increase to double by 2017. Tourism in Indian cuts across its rural-urban divide, and bridges economic gaps. Apart from that, it helps strengthening of ties with developed nation and attracts more private/foreign investment.
Owing to its wonderful geographical features and astounding history & cultures, India is major holiday spot for tourists. Majority of International tourists to India are from USA and UK. Though all its corners draw tourists from far and wide, the top states to receive inbound tourists are Goa, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Rajasthan. Domestic tourism is growing rapidly as ever before. Presently, more than 700 million domestic tourists flock to various destinations in India, providing these destinations with great income and employment.
Steps Taken By Indian Government to Enhance Tourism:
Since tourism is a major source of economic growth, Ministry of Tourism formulates national policies and programs to develop and promote tourism in the country. Continuous efforts are being made to encourage new form of tourism like eco-tourism, medical and rural tourism. A well-improved infrastructure has been provided and various facilities have been established to put the travelers on comfort. Other than that that, liberalization in aviation sector and rationalization in tax rate are some good moves taken by the government. Moreover, tourist friendly Visa regime, immigration services and providing land to establish tourism facilities are other major policy initiatives taken by the government.
Today, a number of travel agencies, governmental as well as private, provide various tour packages to make holiday planning a hassle-free task. They take all responsibilities to arrange an enjoyable tour various destination in India and abroad.
