Traditional ways of water filtration like boiling of water and using chemicals like Iodine and chlorine but none of them Is suitable for today's water purification needs and wants. On the other hand modern techniques like UV, RO and e boiling are very efficient and comfortable way to filter water.

Water is very powerful solvent and almost every thing which comes into way get dissolved in it. Commonly found impurities in water are bi-carbonates of sodium and potassium, Minerals and copper. Water is also a habitat to many micro organism. Impurities in water may cause several dysfunctions and disease to human body. That's why people use water filters for water filtration. This article will help you to under stand different types of water filtration processes used in various water filters.
Water filtration process have two approaches, Traditional Approach and other is using advanced methods of water filtration. Let's have a look on the traditional approaches of water filtering -
Boiling - Historically, boiling is what has been used to disinfect water from microorganisms. Boiling is capable of killing around ninety nine percent of all the bacteria present in the water. Bacteria and protozoa are killed at the first bubble, but water should be boiled to three minutes for others to die. The drawbacks to this method are -
1. It may require lots of fuel and cooking equipment.
2. Water can not be used instantly as it needs to be cool down first.
3. There will be evaporation of water and actual quantity of water will get reduce.
4. Boiling of water do not ensure absence of any particle in the water.
5. Boiling of water do not eliminate any chemical impurity like industrial waste resulting into bitter taste and smell.
Boiling of water may be good for any out door water filtration need but surly it is not the best when it comes to serve indoor water purification needs.
Use of chemical for water filtration - There are two types of chemicals used to filter water Iodine and Chlorine. Iodine is a light weight, low cost and effective water filtration agent. Iodine is capable of killing almost every type of bacteria found in the water and it is also useful as it absorb into the dirt and debris naturally found in water, so the dosage will always vary. People suffering from Thyroid and pregnant ladies must avoid iodine purified water. Iodine can not be used as a regular water filter agent as continuous use of it for more then three months is not advisable. Some people also do not like the taste that iodine gives to water. Chlorine is a poisonous compound and adding too much to water may cause illness, body dysfunction and even death. Government water storage and other large water storage units use chlorine for water filtration process but they use chlorine under expert guidance and personal use of chlorine as water filtration agent must be avoided.
Natural resources – Some water resources like springs release naturally filtered water and for hundreds of years people use to collect spring water for drinking purpose. Spring water although is very pure but at places instances of copper and zinc have been found causing in red and yellow colour of water. Spring water flows on the earth and some impurities can get dissolve before you store that water. You must test spring water for purity before consuming it.
These were the natural ways to clean the water but as you must have noticed that every method has it's own disadvantage and is not suitable for every occasion. Newer and technologically advanced water filtration systems like RO (reverse osmosis), UV (Ultra violet) treatment and e-boiling is much more effective as compared to traditional way of water filtration.
