Not that we don’t have great mountains, caves, rivers and coastlines in this country. But for the extra special terrain, you might have to pack a bag and dig out the old passport.
For example, the Philippines is widely recognised as having some of the best scuba diving sites in the world because of the clarity of the surrounding waters and the sheer diversity of the marine wildlife that inhabits them. Britain’s murky depths just cannot compare to these tropical hotspots.
Other activities cannot even be attempted here, such as skiing for example. The opportunities simply don't exist. Fortunately the best slopes in the world aren't very far away, and getting to the French Alps takes just a few hours by air. When the alternative is a dry ski-slope off the M62 motorway, it seems reasonable to get to the airport.
The problem (sometimes) with activities that get the adrenaline flowing is that they can be very risky. The fact is you can still break your leg on the artifical ski-slope just off the M62 motorway. So when taking on the most challenging areas of the world those risks are much greater.
If travelling abroad expressly to take part in adventurous sports, or even if they are just going to be a feature of an otherwise sedate beach holiday, appropriate travel insurance is necessary. Travel insurance is invaluable under normal circumstances and for fans of adventurous sports it can be a lifesaver.
Most standard polices will not cover activities deemed unusually risky automatically. As a result many companies offer dedicated sports travel insurance for those going away to challenge and terrify themselves doing their favourite sport, whether it is skiing or paragliding.
When things go wrong it is essential to have a policy that is suited to your activities. If you don’t, then you could find that the insurance policy has been invalidated by the activity that led to your injury, for example. Which means hefty hospital bills to add to the pain of that broken leg.
Though it’s not the easiest process to get your head around, searching for your first travel insurance policy shouldn’t be too difficult as long as you know what to expect. Always do your research carefully, and read over the policy so that you can be sure you’re covered for all your needs.
