Web directories are much like the Yellow Pages. The former categorizes websites, usually based on topic. The latter does something similar as far as their subscribers are concerned, but the indexing is determined by the product or service being offered.
In the past, when search engines were not as developed, web directories were quite popular for those doing searches in the World Wide Web. But given the convenience associated with using present-day search engines, web directories have lost some of their popularity.
Are Web Directories Still Relevant?

But this does not mean that web directories are not longer relevant, because the search engine will usually include a few applicable web directories in its listing of search results. The individual then has the option to visit the directory and access the appropriate sites.
The advantage of sites accessed through web directories is that these have been pre-screened as to their relevance to the subject being looked-into. So somehow the quality is assured. This is especially so when it comes to paid directory listing, like Aviva web directory. 2. There are those that require a one-time fee. These are usually more stringent in the evaluation of submissions allowing for a more quality listing. However, sites may change their format through time making them more or less relevant. Therefore there is the possibility of deterioration in the quality of listing as time passes.
3. There are quality directories, like Aviva web directory, that requires an annual fee. This somehow assures the quality of the listing since regular assessment of the sites is done, and those that do not pass the standard criteria are expunged.
Admittedly, web directories have less utility to those doing internet search nowadays given that search engines are capable of providing a comprehensive list of appropriate sites based on given keywords. But a quality directory on a specialized subject may be more convenient, and it could lessen the time required for research.
