Incineration is a process of burning materials. When the process is used to burn up the organic and inorganic waste inside a specially designed machine, it serves in getting the environment rid of a lot of waste products generated through several domestic, industrial and other processes. These machines are usually referred to as waste incinerators. These incinerators again are of various types depending on what kind of waste is being worked upon inside them.

The waste incinerators convert the waste into ash and gaseous by-products that are once again cleared of most of the pollutants before being released into the environment. The heat that is sometimes produced during such incineration process is used for producing electricity.

There are different categories of waste that can be incinerated in these machines and they can be categorised under various heads that include:

Rubbish: It usually comprises wood, paper, cardboard, combustible floor sweeps, cartons and such other material from domestic and industrial units. They are usually combustible stuff that also contains waste from restaurants but not in the form of plastic bags or rubber stuff.

Trash: This kind of waste is again highly combustible but may contain some amount of plastics and rubber stuff. The major ingredients of this kind of incineration waste include wood, paper card boards, laminated papers and oily bags etc.

Garbage: It usually accounts for organic wastes from the hotels, restaurants, markets and hospitals and usually contains high (up to 75 percent) quantity of moisture. It usually comprise animal and food stuff waste.

Refuse: It generally gets its origin from households and residential areas and includes waste containing up to 70 percent moisture.

Animal and human remains: The dead bodies of street animals, carcasses and organic waste from these animals are also burnt and reduced in a waste incinerator.

The incinerators used to destroy the waste from butcher houses or slaughter houses are called butcher waste incinerator and they are an important factor in helping keep the environment clean of the waste from such activities and also save other creatures from the stink that otherwise prevails when the organic waste is dumped in the nature as it is. Butcher waste incinerators are very important in areas where such activities are done on a large scale and also in places like the tanneries.

Now a days waste incineration process is quite specialized and the waste is usually treated and only after hazardous material, if any, is removed from the waste, does the same is put into the process of burning to ashes. Earlier, many workers in an incineration plant used to suffer the curse of toxic waste as there was no provision for separating the hazardous waste beforehand.

Waste incinerators are now a commonplace in most of the municipalities and even industries as they help reduce the size and polluting strength of various kinds of waste from domestic, industrial and other processes. In fact, incineration process may not be able to completely solve the problem of landfills it does reduce the amount of waste in these landfills significantly.
