The indicate, which was recently picked up for a 2nd season, centers on three lifelong friends -- Terry Elliott (Scott Bakula), Owen Thoreau Jr. (Andre Braugher) and Romano's Joe -- each and every stuck on a plateau. Terry is an underemployed actor, shrugging his way by way of temp jobs and awaiting a break that is not coming. Joe owns a party-supply keep, battles a gambling habit that contributed to his marriage crumbling, and struggles to speak along with his two teenage kids. On paper, Owen is the most secure with the three, but he functions beneath the thumb of his imperious father.
Among the guys, there is the occasional antipathy that lurks in a lot of long-standing friendships. Terry, along with his disavowal of adult obligation, receives the brunt of it, but Joe's gambling wears on his friends as well. But their friendship can climate these bumps. One in the show's recurring visual motifs is in the three adult men hiking up a hill -- they don't ever seem to get towards the top rated, but nobody complains.
"Men of the Sure Age" is as a lot about these actors overcoming the burdens of their histories as their characters navigating the hurdles of middle age. Romano, tender and hesitant, can be a world away from your knee-jerk yuk-dropper of "Everybody Enjoys Raymond." Bakula, greatest known as the mildly sq. Dr. Sam Beckett on "Quantum Leap," gets to play a full-fledged Lothario (an emotionally hapless one, but nevertheless).
Braugher's acknowledged best for his portrayal of the ferocious detective Frank Pembleton on "Homicide: Lifestyle for the Road," so his beleaguered Owen might appear like an unreasonable stretch. But Pembleton constantly had a vulnerability underneath his swagger that brought the character straight down to human scale.
There are flickers of that in Owen, a personality with virtually no spine. For a person factor, he's doughy. In one particular scene, he sits lower in bed and strips to a pair of white underpants: In essence, he's a child.
His wife, Melissa (Lisa Hamilton), fights battles on his behalf. Owen functions, unhappily, at the family vehicle dealership (this week, his father passes off another, much more productive salesman as his son). Once the contractor operating on his house skipped out, he was forced to maneuver his household in with his father -- defeated and infantilized, at do the job and at house.
That he's altering and developing can be a provided, but he should be aware: Even this show's happy endings include black eyes.
