In 2004, David Shore, Paul Attanasio and with Attanasio Katie Jacobs business partner, started the watch (untitled at the time) at Fox as a medical detective program CSI-style, a fleece hospital where doctors examined symptoms and their causes. Attanasio was inspired to create a pleading by medical column in The New York Times Magazine "Diagnosis", written by the doctor Lisa Sanders. Fox bought the series, but then the network president, Gail Berman, said the creative team, "I want a medical show, but I do not want to see white coats, which are in the corridor." Jacobs said that this provision was one of many influences that led to the final shape of the show.
