A planogram is a schematic drawing of shelves and fixtures and the position of products on those shelves or fixtures. It is used in the retail industry to help to map out how products need to be displayed.

Retailers use it to see how best to display the products they stock, so that they catch their customers attention and sell more product as a result.

Why Use A Planogram?

Planograms give you a good idea of how a display will look without you having to physically dress those products onto the shelves in your store. This saves you time and ensures that you are not constantly disrupting and annoying your customers, by constantly dressing and re-dressing shelves until you find a product layout that works.

Using a planogram you can come up with different product layouts and compare them side by side. So, you can come up with new layouts in the comfort of your office over a cup of coffee.

You can not only sell more by using a planogram you can make sure that you sell more of the products that are profitable. For example if you sell 30 lines of biscuits, it makes sense to sell as many of the biscuits with a high mark up as possible because there is more profit in it for your store. A planogram will allow you to see how your biscuit display would look if you put the high mark up biscuits at eye level, where customers look first, and the cheaper products below them.

Tips for Using a Planogram

Most planogram software takes a while to master fully, so start with a small display area of your shop which contains only a few lines for example tinned beans and spaghetti.

Give yourself plenty of time to work through the scenarios. So, if you want to use it for your Christmas chocolates display, begin using the planogram at least a month before you are due to order your Christmas stock. Your final planogram layout will dictate how much your initial order of each line will be.
