Induced pluripotent stem cell is often referred as IPS cell. It is a type of form of pluripotent stem cell, which is artificially derived from a non-pluripotent cell. It is an adult somatic cell, which is created by inducing force of certain genes. Each IPS cell is quite similar and identical to embryonic stem cells, which are one of the natural pluripotent stem cells. It was the year of 2006 when the first IPS cell was produced from mouse cells and then later in the year of 2007 IPS cells were produced by using human cells. And that was time, when stem cell technology entered in a developed stage.

The researchers are using IPS cells in several therapeutic treatments without facing any kind of controversies regarding the use of embryos. The best part of each induced pluripotent stem cell is that it completely avoids the issue of graft versus hot disease and immune rejection, which is totally opposite to the usage of embryonic cells, as they are derived from patient’s body. Typically, IPS cells are derived by transfecting of various genes into non pluripotent cells. Fibroblasts are a common example of this. It is through retroviruses, which results in transfection. Shinya Yamanaka made his team at Kyoto University and he and his team members produced the first induced pluripotent stem cell. The cells, which have been produced, are quite similar to those pluripotent stem cells, which are naturally isolated.

If you will do search on these cells, then you will come to know that IPS cells are morphologically similar to embryonic stem cells. They are round in shape, have large sized nucleolus and little cytoplasm. The researchers are working hard on the development of the technology, which is used in the derivation of IPS cells and are committed to make this technology developed and efficient enough to make sure that it start helping more and more researchers in the treatment of certain diseases including Parkinson’s disease.
