What Is the Heritability of Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)

Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a common genetic disease with a high heritability. However, some parents do not have a scientific understanding of PKD so they do not know exactly if their disease will pass down to their children and what the specific heritability is. PKD consists of two types: Autosomal Dominant PKD (ADPKD) and the less common Autosomal Recessive PKD (ARPKD). If one of parents has ADPKD, every child will have 50% of chance of be affected by the abnormal gene. However, if the both of the parents are PKD suffers, the heritability will reach 75%. Therefore, if there is a family history or someone else suffering from PKD, other family members should do inspection in time to make clear out if they have the disease. Early treatment of PKD can prevent the disease progression and save the residual renal function to the most extent.
