Finding and buying a high-definition television (HDTV) is hard enough. Now that you have decided to buy an HDTV, you are faced with another challenge of either buying two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) televisions.

If you visit your local electronic stores or browse the Internet, you will find lots of 3D televisions, from Panasonic, Mitsubishi, LG, Sony, Samsung, Philips and Toshiba. If you go by impression, you will surely be awed by the 3D television. When done right, a 3D television adds depth which will make you feel as if you are inside the television set.

Comparing the 2D and 3D Television:

When it comes to the consumer electronics market, being one of the first buyers of a new product can be quite costly. There is no argument that a new product always fetches a high price. When compared with 2D televisions, 3D televisions are somewhat expensive. Some common features of a 3D television are light crystal display (LCD)/light emitting diode (LED) displays that require the use of active shutter glasses to allow you to view 3D images.

Because a fast display is a requirement, 3D is being integrated by television manufacturers into their expensive models. Furthermore, additional gear is needed to allow you to view and get the most out of your 3D television. The good news is, with a 3D television set, you have the latest HDTV technology that will also work with traditional 2D content.

What You Can Expect from 3D Television:

What is 3D HDTV without its content? A 3D content is important for you to be able to enjoy the technology and make it worth its cost. However, there is a limitation when it comes to 3D content. It is only logical that you expect to view a wide selection of 3D programs and movies as you have paid a premium for your set. However, the 3D technology is still just in its infancy. But the satisfaction you will get from the technology is worth the price you paid for it.

3D Lenses:

Lenses are basic gear for a 3D television. One type of lens is the anaglyphic passive which is the common blue and red lenses that force your eyes to see the same color of images on the screen. Polarization 3D glasses have polarized lenses that have similar technology with anaglyphic passive minus the need for images in red and blue. Other types of lenses for a 3D television are autosteroscopic or lenticular and active shutter.

The method of 3D imaging capturing is called stereoscopy. The method involves the use of two cameras to capture similar images that are spaced with a distance similar as human pupils. With the use of lenses, your eyes are forced to view the combined images separately. Meanwhile, your brain will combine the images that each of your eye is seeing into 3D images. This makes the images appear to be leaping off the screen.
