Before buying a used car, you should consider what you will be using it for. If you do a lot of city driving, then you will probably want to keep the size of your vehicle down so that parking will be easier, whereas if you engage in a lot of outdoor activities, then you might want to consider getting a larger, more rugged vehicle such as a 4x4 or an MPV. In this article, we shall look at the various car types that can be found on the second hand market, and discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of each type.
City cars can be very convenient from a parking and fuel economy perspective, but it is rare to find them in good condition, and the cleaner examples tend to be on the pricey side.
One of the most popular types of car is the small hatchback, as these are convenient and fuel efficient. You can usually pick them up quite cheaply, and they are usually pretty inexpensive to repair due to the plentiful supply of spare parts.
Due to the fact that companies often buy large amounts of family cars in bulk for use as company cars, they can often be picked up quite cheaply on the second hand market. Bear in mind however, that people tend to show more respect to their personal cars than they do to their company cars, so you should give these an extra thorough going over before you buy.
MPVs, also known as people carriers, can be great value for larger families, especially the smaller models. The larger models offer more in the way of room, but are also more expensive to run, and very difficult to park.
Sports cars tend to be expensive to insure and maintain, especially those from specialist manufacturers, although these at least hold their value quite well. Look out for the sporty models from more mainstream manufacturers, as these often share parts with their less sporty brethren, making them cheaper to maintain, and they can often be had for bargain prices due to their relative lack of desirability.
Mainstream car manufacturers often produce luxury models with the aim of enhancing their brand value, and these are some of the fastest depreciating cars around, which means that you could end up with a real bargain if you buy one second hand. They tend to be pretty expensive to fix when they go wrong due to the large amount of electronics on board, but the build quality is usually well above average, so you should encounter less mechanical problems.
Big 4x4s are a great choice for the outdoor type, as they are rugged and have plenty of space for sports and camping equipment. They can be picked up relatively cheaply on the second hand market, but tend to guzzle fuel like there is no tomorrow, so you might want to go for a diesel model if you can find one to keep your fuel costs reasonable.
