Why should a company giveaway promotional products when it is difficult to prove that it produces any return on investment? This is a question that organizations have asked through the ages and if you are working in marketing or buying promotional merchandise, you will know the difficulty in proving to the CFO, the Controller or your bosses why it is important to have promotional products.
Sometimes you have to fight tooth and nail!

But it is time think again and not to be short sighted about building your brand.

Promotional Products are often deemed important "because everybody else has them", or "the sales reps really need something to give prospects and customers during their visits" or "we'd look stupid if we didn't have anything to giveaway at our trade show booth".

Does this all sound familiar? But wait a minute - there is more to promotional giveaways than just logos slapped on a piece of merchandise. If you run a business, you are in the business of building and maintaining your brand every day and in everything that you do - not just through the products that you sell.

Your brand is not what you say you are - your brand is "what the customers say about you when you're not there".

Building a brand is a collective exercise of several touch points or interactions. Consider the many times your customers or prospects interact with your brand or company in just one day:

- When they open a bill from your company

- When they talk to your customer service rep on the phone

- When they have dinner or drinks with one of your sales reps

- When they visit your website

- When they order through your website (and the website crashes!)

These are all important transactions that build and influence your brand one way or the other.

Marketing, by definition, is the only controlled environment in which you can communicate about your brand the way you want it to be perceived. And marketing is a collective attack of materials that when accumulated reach its total capacity.

A press release, an advertisement, a brochure, a radio spot, a TV sport are all standalone marketing activities but it is when they are intertwined, consistent with each other and working together that you will see the power of your Brand Building Efforts. TO measure the effect of a press release or an advertisement is technically very difficult - but you can measure the total effect of a sales campaign with greater precision.

The Promotional Product is an investment in building your brand. By itself, it does not immediately add up to a sale or increased sales figure or return on investment.

But when included to artillery of deployment, it constitutes brand building at its finest. A promotional giveaway will contribute to building your brand and what the customers will say about you, when you are not there to defend it, or sell it.
