Lagos, one of the most populated cities in Africa, ranks 7th amongst the fastest growing cities in the world. It has emerged as a potential career destination for expatriates looking for quick money and ready to explore the most exotic continent of the world. Jobs in Lagos are burgeoning with government providing boost to its economy based on exports of crude oil and petroleum.

The jobs overseas have always fascinated the professionals as along with the money it offers an outlandish way of life. As soon as you think about applying for jobs in Lagos, take a detailed look at the kind of city it is, the culture it follows, the living standards, the work environment, the laws and code of conduct, the demographic conditions, the economic situations and other such things. Go ahead only if you are comfortable with the results of your search and if you believe that adjusting to the new, unexplored place would not take much time.

This article aims at discussing the overall working and living conditions in the city of Lagos. Let us first take a look at the climate followed by its economic dependence, infrastructure, demography, culture, sports, education, so on and so forth.

-The climate in Lagos is similar to the whole Southern Nigeria’s with two rainy seasons from April to July and October to November. The dry spells are usually during August to September and December to March with March being the hottest and July the coolest month.

-The infrastructure of the city is commendable with one of the most extensive road networks in the entire West Africa. Linked to numerous highways and bridges, it boasts of BRT (Bus Rapid Transit), railway line, ferries and airports.

-It is home to Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry; theater shows; center of music and sport stadiums. It has many educational institutions-polytechnics and universities while being a tourist hub at the same time.

The Nigerian center of excellence, Lagos is a hugely populated city facing its own set of challenges as common in all big cities. There are plenty of problems like that of traffic congestion, water and power supply, air and noise pollution, illiteracy, etc. but the silver lining is the fact that efforts are being made by both government and people to improve the scenario. Moreover, Lagos is not only about these issues, it is also about the green pastures, the diverse collection of people, the cultural heritage, the festivals- archaeology, ethnography & traditional art, the music & films and many more things. Not only this, jobs in Lagos pay very well and offers various sources for recreation on weekends. All such things together make it worth to work and live in this rapidly developing Nigerian city of Africa.

Sometime back, Lagos was counted among the worst cities to work in and this came as a shock to thousands of expatriates both currently working and those who have worked there in the past. They strongly protested its inclusion in the list and said that it was much better and safer than other war torn cities. And then it is also noteworthy that Lagos is the 59th global city in the world according to the report released by Foreign Policy magazine in collaboration with A T Kearney and The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. This means that if it ranks among the top 100 global cities of the world, it surely is worth staying in. Therefore, taking up jobs in Lagos may be a very subjective experience reinforcing the fact that it is up to you to make your stay rewarding and worthwhile or the opposite.
