Yeast infection is a kind of fungal infection caused by the thriving of yeast, a type of fungus. Candidiasis is the most common form of yeast infection and there are several species of candida, of which the commonest species is candida ablicans. Normally these fungi reside on surfaces of our body. They create problem only when they multiply. The skin usually safeguards the internal body from this infection. But any cut or abrasion on the skin may allow the fungi to enter the body and create innumerable disorders. When fungus enters bloodstream and travels throughout the body, it might lead to systemic failure and even death. The warm and moist regions of body serve as a congenial environment for the overgrowth of yeasts.

Underarms, nail-beds, lower abdomen, under the breasts etc are common regions facilitating yeast overgrowth. In babies, diaper wearing regions may develop yeast infection. Superficial yeast infection occurs in the form of red flat rash patch with sharp scalloped edges. In women vaginal yeast infection or vaginitis is quite common.
