Bountiful things (true, false, and speculative) have been written about the history of the tarot. This article addresses some oft-repeated statements about the tarot which may seem like historical fact, but are actually without basis when considered in the light of the evidence presently available. This does not mean there is no room for hypothetical or non-factual stories regarding tarot. Myths and saga express the human soul and creativity. These delusions tell us much about the significance tarot has on an inspirational growth level. They speak an inner truth that is, at times, more personally true than external facts. However, both history and myth may suffer when the two become confused.

The tarot first known as trionfi and later as tarocchi, tarock, and several others names, is a pack of cards (most commonly 78), used from the mid-15th century in various parts of Europe to play a group of card games such as Italian tarocchini and French tarot.

Tarot is derived from the Italian word tarocchi,. It is believed that it relates to the name of river of the same country, the Taro River, while there's also a version that it came from Arabic word meaning turuq which means pathways. But still there is dispute over the real origin of its name. Wherever it came from, one thing is for sure, tarot is used to change one's life nowadays through the meaning represented in the cards.

Tarot in the earlier era was meant for pleasure only. It was only in the late 14th century when games using cards was introduced in Europe. Decks included were (quite similar to) Swords, Staves, Cups and Coins. Added cards soon came out and were called trumps. Divination using card was discovered in Giacomo Casanova's mistress' diary as she was the first to use the decks for divination.

Pictures displayed on the early decks were Greek gods' images (16 cards known as trumps). Added packs are written, heroes (Rome, Greece and Babylonia), ideas and poems. This game card continued to gain its popularity until 1450 marked its importance.

The practice of associating tarot in rituals through signs or some supernatural forces, that a normal person can't adept, began in the 17th century. Tarot Cards opened the door to divination when Antoine Court de Gebelin (Swiss clergyman) gave meaning to Tarot as "royal road to wisdom". He also pointed out that divination using cards were first practiced by the Ancient Egyptians. Though in further research, nothing supported Gebelin's statements.

The tale of tarot is still full of speculations and shall continue to be which adds to its mythical nature.
