This article will provide few instances of Jewish Holidays in a year which are not known to many.
The references of most of the Jewish holidays can be found in Biblical mitzvoth or in books of Israeli history. The Jewish New Year is known as Rosh Hashanah. It is also known as the Day of Judgment when God takes a note of all the good deeds and sins of an individual and passes his judgment accordingly. Blowing of shofar commemorates this event.
The first ten days of the Jewish New Year is known as Aseret Yemei Teshuva. This is commonly known as 10 Days of Repentance. This is the time when one actually sits back and notes down about all the sins that he has committed in this life and asks for repentance. Fast is kept and after self-reflection one comes in terms with one’s deeds. On the third day of Fast, Gedalia takes place.
Some of the other important Jewish holidays include Yom Kippur which is considered the holiest of all the days. It is known as a day of reconciliation and atonement. Eating, drinking and marital relations are not allowed on this day and fast begins early in sundown and continues till nightfall.
The Jewish celebrate Sukkot for 7 long days. It is also popularly known as the Feat of Booths. This pilgrimage festival has its reference in the Bible also. The Jews generally reside in booths in the course of this festival and they take their food and sleep in the sukkah which is constructed following strict instructions.
Tu Bishvat is an important day among the Jewish holidays. It is called as New Year for Trees. This is the time when fruit tithes are counted in the trees and according to Bible the fruits of the first three years are not to be eaten and the fruits of the fourth year is first brought to Temple of Jerusalem and counted. People on this day consume various types of fruits.
You will simply love the celebrations of New Year for Kings. Nisan is known as the first month which comes in the Hebrew calendar. It is the Mishnah which actually indicates the year from which the Jewish kings came to power. The day is counted from Nisan itself. Sefirah is celebrated for 49 days and this is the period which comes in between Shavout and Pesach. During this period offerings are taken to the Temple in Jerusalem. Judaism is known for its teachings which establish a connection between Shavout and Pesach.
So there are several important Jewish days in the Jewish calendar that are very significant.
