Greece is one of the well-known countries’ of the Mediterranean region. It is a highly cultured country both in respect of lifestyle and food. Though in lifestyle it had maintained its ancient tradition but in areas regarding cuisine it had allowed foreign invasion.

To talk about Greek cuisine, it must be said that the most conventional Greek food is the Greek salad, which is primarily made of Thyme, basil, fennel seeds and olive oil. A number of Greek cuisines are of the time of prehistoric Greece like lentil soup, retsina, skordalia etc. Loukaniko is of Roman time and avrotaraho and paximadi are of Byzantium period. Some of the Greek cuisines have Arabic, Persian, Ottoman, Turkish and Italian ancestry. Now a day fast food is also becoming very popular.

The use of olive oil is a must in all the Greek dishes. Among cereals, wheat is most important followed by barley. Among the vegetables potato, onion, pepper, tomato, eggplant, green beans, okra etc are important. Different types of honey are used in Greek dishes. The dishes have superb flavor due to use of oregano, mint, garlic, cinnamon, dill, and bay laurel leaves etc. Lamb, mutton, poultry, rabbit, fish, pork are eaten. Cheese like feta, kasseri, manouri, mizithra etc is used.

To start with a Greek dish, a modest Greek meze is a very good option. Pilikia and orektika is also good to start with. Among the general Greek cuisines, boureki, dolmades, fava, Greek salad, horta, koukkia, kolokytho anthoi, lachanosalata, saganaki, tzatziki, spanakopita, palata salata, tyropita, taramosalata, skordalia, hortopita, taramosalata etc. are quite popular.

The Greeks eat different types of broths like avgolemono, colomo soup, bourou-bourou, lentil soup, fasolada, magiritsa, patsas, psarosoupa, revithia, trahana soup, kakavia etc. The vegetarian dishes include aginares A la polita, arakas me aginares, bamies, domatokeftethes, horta, yemista, spanakorizo, lachanodolmades etc.

Greeks eat a number of meat dishes. In the end Greeks always prefer some sweets. Some of them are yogurt with honey, karidopita (cake with walnut), diples, koulourakia, halvadopites, baklava, galaktoboureka, kourabiedes, moustalevria, loukoumades, rizogalo, ravani, moustokouloura, spoon sweets and vasilopita. Among the beverages, wine is most popular followed by beer, coffee, ouzo, tsipouro etc. Among the wine, retsina (white wine), mavrodafni (red wine) etc are popular. In case of beer, vergina, heinekin, amstel, zeos, mythos, Kaiser, fix, henninger etc are widely drunk. The people also drink Metaxa, which is a sweet brandy.

All these cuisines have become very popular even outside Greece. People all over the world simply love to relish these cuisines and Greeks are very proud of their cooking habits.
