San Francisco's SoMa Neighborhood

San Francisco is well known for its unique neighborhoods. From the authentic Chinese shops and restaurants in Chinatown to the beautiful Victorian home of Alamo Square, San Francisco has neighborhoods in spades.

As in many cities, these neighborhoods tend to change over time and take on new identities.

SoMa is one such neighborhood. Short for “South of Market Street,” this once dilapidated neighborhood has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years and is now considered one of the city’s best. With everything from world-class museums to sports stadiums to iconic landmarks, SoMA has a little bit of something for everyone.

SoMa Landmarks and Attractions

One of the easiest landmarks to spot in SoMa is the spectacular Millennium Tower located at 301 Mission Street, is the city's premier luxury condominium building and is home to football legend Joe Montana. This amazing skyscraper is the tallest residential building west of the Mississippi and boasts some of the most spectacular views on the West Coast. At the base of the Millennium Tower is RN74, an amazing European restaurant owned by celebrity chef Michael Mina.

Today, the SoMa neighborhood is home to a wide array of attractions to visit. One of the top destinations in the neighborhood is the Moscone Center. This sprawling entertainment complex and convention center plays host to many great attractions and activities. These include the Charles Looff Carousel- perfect for kids- and the Metreon, a large retail and entertainment complex that boasts a movie theater with IMAX screens. Other attractions in the Moscone Center include the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Yerba Buena Gardens and the fascinating Zeum museum. SoMa has many museums, parks and landmarks to visit as well. Some of these include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Craft and Folk Art, South Park, the California Historical Society Museum and iconic landmarks such as the historic Ferry Building and Transbay Terminal.

Activities and things to do in SoMA

Visitors to SoMa can catch a San Francisco Giants baseball game at AT&T Park, located along the bay’s edge. CounterPULSE Theater also hosts many fascinating events and art. SoMa is also home to a bevy of clubs, restaurants, boutiques and shops. The San Francisco Shopping Center is one of the largest malls in California.
