The Country that Consumes the Most Wine

Which country do you think consumes the most wine? The answer may surprise you.
A recent study by Vinexpo and the International Wine an Spirit Research (ISWR) has revealed that United States consumed the approximate equivalent of 3.7 billion – yes, billion – bottles of wine in the year 2011. In a surprise twist, America has grown to surpass traditional wine loving nations like: France, Italy, Spain, Austria and Germany. In addition, China has come to knock England out of fifth place; which may not come as a surprise since China is one of the quickest growing markets out there.

According to a prediction by the ISWR, the U.S. is expected to increase its wine consumption by 10 percent over the next four years. In addition to its watchful eye on the United States, the wine industry will be keeping a close eye on the wine market in China and Hong Kong. It is predicted that over the same four years, their combined growth of consumption will reach an estimated 54 percent. However, the U.S. will remain the main market despite China’s immense population.

Individual intake of wine is also expected to grow as well. It is estimated that U.S. consumers will be drinking approximately 13 liters of wine per adult per year and that China will be drinking an average of two liters per adult per year by the year 2015. Not only are U.S. consumers imbibing more wine, they are also turning to higher quality bottles of wine. According to the study, sales of wine priced over $10 a bottle, grew by 14.7 percent.

While the U.S. has increased its wine intake, it has slowed down on its beer intake. Last year marks the third year in a row that the U.S. has experienced a decline in beer consumption. Conversely, the Beverage Information Group states that the decline stems from a decreased sale of light beer – a division that accounts for more than half of the beer market. While the beer industry calculates slow growth overall, it expects more growth in the craft beer market.

So with a progression in craft beer consumption and higher quality wines in our glasses, is it safe to say that the U.S. is becoming more sophisticated drinkers? Or are consumers simply enjoying the social atmosphere that is being fashioned by beer and wine tastings?
