The term Christian Art denotes the visual works created for portraying the various aspects and principle of the Christian religion. As a matter of fact, nearly all Christian communities have created instances of this art form through the centuries. However, the style, media and way of presentation have changed over time.

Christian arts have several significant meanings and they are important not only for a Christian but for a non-Christian as well.
The common link among all works of Christian Art is the theme. A majority of the Christian artworks have been created on the theme of the life of Jesus and the incidents described in the Old Testament of Bible. Some of the artists have also chosen the saints of Bible as their themes. The artists involved in any Christian art have a good knowledge of the Bible and the religious teaching of Jesus Christ.
A good deal of Christian art was produced during the golden period of the Roman civilization. The Roman Catholic Church played a significant role in making and preserving the gems of the Christian artworks. Christian arts are also preserved in many other places.
However, it would be wrong to assume that the effect of Christian Art was limited to paintings and statues. The structure of the buildings like the churches, tombs, cathedrals and monasteries built in the middle ages were largely affected by Christian art. A sub section of Christian Art known as the Byzantine art is known for its awesome esthetic brilliance. This art form has a visible religious undertone that does not stress on depicting objects or human figures.
After the 18th century, the Christian Art, particularly in sculpture, became more esthetics oriented. People started visualizing this art more for the sake of artistic sensualities than worship. Some of the modern artists like Marc Chagall, Eric Gill, Elizabeth Frink, Jacob Epstein and Graham Sutherland are renowned for some of the artworks they produced during the period.
The legendary Italian sculptor and painter Leonardo Da Vinci created some of the most eminent pieces of Christian artwork in his life. One of his most popular and critically acclaimed artwork is ‘The Last Supper’.
The various incidents related with the life of the Jesus Christ have been depicted with great care in many of the Christian Artworks. These include events from his birth, baptism, crucifixion, resurrection and temptation by Satan. Other popular instances of Christian art are Madonna and Child, dove, sacrificial lamb etc.
The early instances of Christian art are heavily influenced by Roman art. While the exterior parts of the initial Christian buildings were rather plain, the interiors were decorated lavishly. The images of the various generations of Christian artworks can be found in the Internet and one can browse such sites for enhancing his knowledge on the subject of Christian Art. This will also improve his depth on any kind of art.
