The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments were written by the hand of God in stone, in the form of two stone tablets. In the Bible Exodus 31:18 refers to the tablets containing the Ten Commandments as the "Tablets of Testimony" because they give insight into the nature of God. According to the Bible, there were two sets of the Ten Commandments. The first Ten Commandments, inscribed by God, were smashed by Moses when he was enraged by the sight of the Children of Israel worshiping the Golden Calf (Exodus 32:4) The second set of the Ten Commandments were later cut by Moses and rewritten by God. The Ten Commandments are the basis for western law and justice.

Commandment 1: You shall have no other gods before me.
Commandment 2: You shall not make for yourself an idol.
Commandment 3: You shall not make wrongful use of the name of your God.
Commandment 4: Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.
Commandment 5: Honor your father and mother.
Commandment 6: You shall not murder.
Commandment 7: You shall not commit adultery.
Commandment 8: You shall not steal.
Commandment 9: You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Commandment 10: You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor.
